When I asked those in my existing market things I could do that I’m not already doing I got a few interesting suggestions. One person said that instead of just selling tickets to concerts and events I could have people volunteer their time for admission to the concerts. This is something I had not even considered. Another person suggested I investigate areas that do not already have events and try to promote them there. The last person I spoke with suggested I try more of a traveling venture to expand my audience.

With this information it made me consider opening booths in festival grounds across the county and selling products to promote the business where the funds go to those suffering from disasters. It really showed me that instead of keeping my organization in one area that traveling to different areas may be a good way to promote to more people. I also liked the idea of people volunteering their time to attend the concerts. They could volunteer their time helping people reconstruct their homes in trade for concert or event tickets.

In the new Market I spoke with a few business owners who owned kid themed businesses. One man I spoke with runs a train for children at the mall. He has done several different adventures for kids and he makes good money. One thing he suggested is looking at the leases rental rates of venues because from his personal experience he has had trouble keeping afloat in areas where the rental rates are too high. Another person I spoke to has a few business ideas herself that relate to fashion or a lounge for adults that are different from my ideas. This gave me some interesting new insight.

I thought that potentially marketing to special events for kids could help benefit kids that had experienced loses due to the damages from the hurricane. Also, the girl I work with gave me some interesting ideas of how I could use the job I already do and tie it into some ideas for my business. I manage an Easter bunny shop at the mall and she suggested I create a business taking photos for kids and using the profits to go towards disaster victims. This gave me some ideas I had not already thought about. I think all these suggestions help me broaden my ideas on business. Therefore I am considering changing the idea of my business somewhat so my profits could expand and I would be more successful in raising revenue for disaster victims. I am actually considering redesigning my business from a nonprofit to a business venture that a portion of the proceeds goes to disaster victims.

  1. Hi Victoria,

I agree that reaching out at other events and promoting what you are putting on is vital to the success and turn out of the event. Rental rates can be very expensive so keeping those in mind is a big priority. One thing to consider is a tradeoff between the organization and the event space. This may cut costs and prove to be more beneficial for the venue altogether.

  2. Victoria, I agree with your consideration of business versus non-profit -- I think people prefer buying from businesses-for-charity. Personally I get overwhelmed by the number of non-profits asking for handouts where my "benefit" is only a slimmer wallet, so to speak. Creating a business would give you a lot of potential approaches to generate sales.

  3. Victoria, I love the idea of turning the nonprofit side of your business into a for-profit one that can help young children that have been affected by natural disasters. By participating in normal profitable businesses, like the Easter bunny at the mall or portrait sessions, with proceeds going to help those in need, everybody wins.
