Reading Reflection No 3

The book I choose was “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”. The main objective of this book was to train your brain how to create a growth mindset. The author goes into detail about how a fixed mindset can cause you to limit your potential while a growth mindset allows you to reach your potential. She discusses how to become self-aware of yourself and even how by observing others you become self-aware.

The book really connected with the class in several ways. It was a great time to read it as I had just watched lectures about how using failure to improve creates a growth mindset. When you use the failures, you have experienced as learning tools instead of stopping points it really gives you a way to improve. I think this book further enhances how you can achieve success through mindset regardless of failure. Something that is reiterated in the class is how entrepreneurs often fail at many ventures before they do succeed. With the growth mindset it gives us an opportunity to keep learning and moving forward instead of getting stuck in one failure and missing future opportunities.

If I was to design a project for this class based on the book I would have the students create a list of at least ten things, they have failed at or things they wish they would good at and haven’t achieved yet. Then I would have them come up with ideas based on the growth mindset to improve their ability to see how things could be done better.

I think I use the growth mindset a lot in life. The biggest “aha” moment in the book for me was when the author presented how a growth mindset works in relationships. She said that while most relationships a person looks for the right person and thinks they should accept each other as is, in a fixed mindset. She says with the growth mindset personal growth and embracing change creates for a successful relationship. I thought this was a very good point. So for me I saw how the growth mindset works well in business and personal relationships as well. Being able to adapt and act on the growth mindset leads to higher potential in business, relationships and life.

  1. Hi Victoria,

It sounds like this book is incredibly useful when setting out on the entrepreneurial pursuit. Adopting the growth mindset, I think, is the most important core value for someone trying to become a successful player in the business industry. I believe you exercise can really help people better understand what they have accomplished, how they achieved those accomplishments and ways they can use those skills to succeed in the future.

  2. Hey Victoria, I think that this book makes a great point. A lot of people think that once you are an adult, you are going to be who you are now forever. They couldn't be more wrong. Everyone has room to grow. Until you are perfect, there are always parts of yourself that you can improve upon. This is something I believe in whole heartedly. It's a process, and it takes time, but giving up on yourself can't be an option.
