Growing your Social Capital

1) Katie- Fundraiser Organizer

2) domain expert

3) She is a mutual friend of mine from High School who created a fundraiser after the hurricane to help a family. I emailed her and asked if I could talk to her about her experience.

4) They gave me advice on how to open and operate a fundraiser from personal experience. We talked awhile about how they created the fundraiser and how I could easily start one. Many of the donors I found were personal friends or friends of friends that knew each other. In return for her information she asked me for some real estate advice from my previous experience. In this way it was an exchange of information.

5) I think the information I received is beneficial to creating a fundraising experience. I also think since she has follows that donated to her fundraiser she could let those donors know of mine and they would potentially help assist.

Finally: Reflect.

Since it was a  mutual friend I think this networking experience was like daily networking. However, showing an interest in her fundraiser sparks a mutual interest. I think she would be quick to recommend people to my fundraiser since we both share a mutual passion.

1) Lindsey- Founded Hurricane Relief Group

2) market expert She filled the spot since she had already begun to create a following of supporters of disaster relief.

3) I found this person online. She had created a group on Facebook to have those who suffered from the devastation of the hurricane come together and talk and share resources so I reached out to her to talk to her about her experience.

4)Again, I asked her to speak with me about her experience and ask her if my ideas to create a nonprofit would be good ideas. In return it was expected that I join her group.

5) I think this person has been extremely important to help me connect with an entire group that shares the audience I am trying to target.

Finally: Reflect.

This experience was different than most encounters. It is more difficult to reach out to a stranger. However, I was delighted about how eager she was to share her advice and experience and offer pointers. I think this makes it easier to speak with someone even that you don’t know well that has already started the path you are interested in.

1) Krista- Supplies product and services for Girl Scouts

2) supplier she oversees the Girl Scouts and make sure orders are filled and completed

3) I found her through a mutual friend and asked them if they could put me in contact with her.

4) I wanted to find out more about how the Girl Scouts company utilizes products such as cookies to help receive funds. I thought this was an interesting idea I could incorporate into my business as well. In return I had previously bought girl scout cookies from the family, so it was almost a return favor.

5) I think the experience I got and the people she knew that were willing to purchase products for the greater good would be beneficial to network with.

Finally: Reflect.

I think this one really gave me insight on how I could further add products to my company to utilize a profit margin. I had previously thought about the idea and it really seems to be beneficial. I also think the people she already knows would be willing to purchase things from me, even if it was in the form of a bake sale to raise funds for hurricane relief.

  2. Hello Victoria!
It looks like all of the people you connected with were beneficial to your process! I know that finding someone in your domain with the same endeavor as you is helpful to bounce ideas off of and see what has and has not worked for them. That personal experience and learning from mistakes they have made is valuable. It also seems like you got some new ideas from these people, especially from the supplies expert, Krista. When a connection can help spark a new idea it makes connecting with them seem like no work at all.

  3. Hi Victoria,

It's a great idea to connect with nonprofit executives, especially if you want to start a nonprofit organization. Starting a nonprofit can be confusing, especially with the tons of paperwork and obstacles needed to overcome to start the company. Meeting with people who have experience in this can make your dream become a reality much faster.
